WireGuard is a modern VPN protocol designed for speed, simplicity, and strong cryptography. Compared with older VPN stacks, WireGuard’s smaller codebase is easier to audit and often delivers higher throughput with lower latency - especially on mobile networks and routers. WireGuard typically uses ChaCha20-Poly1305 authenticated encryption and establishes tunnels using lightweight key exchange, which helps reconnect quickly after sleep/wake or Wi-Fi-to-cellular changes. In practice, many “fast VPN” apps are WireGuard-based. Privacy still depends on how a provider manages keys, logging, and exit infrastructure. If your use case is streaming, gaming, or daily browsing, WireGuard is often the best default. If you need legacy compatibility or advanced obfuscation, OpenVPN may still be useful as a fallback. Always combine WireGuard with a kill switch and leak protection.
