WebRTC

WebRTC is a browser technology enabling real-time communications like video calls and peer-to-peer connections. It can also expose network information, such as local IP addresses or candidate public IPs, through STUN/ICE mechanisms. For VPN users, this can create a “WebRTC leak” where a website learns identifying IP details even while a VPN is connected. Not every setup leaks, but it’s common enough that privacy-conscious users should check. Mitigations include adjusting browser settings (where supported), using privacy extensions, or using a VPN with strong leak protection and proper routing. Note that WebRTC is useful for legitimate apps like conferencing; disabling it entirely can break functionality. A balanced approach is to limit WebRTC’s ability to reveal local IPs while keeping core features. In DVPN scenarios, the same risk exists because the leak occurs at the browser layer; routing through decentralized nodes doesn’t automatically prevent exposure if the browser shares addresses outside the tunnel. The best practice is to test: connect your VPN, run a WebRTC leak test, and confirm only VPN-associated IPs appear. Combine this with DNS/IPv6 leak tests for a complete view of your privacy posture.
