Software VPN

A software VPN is a VPN you run using an app on a device (phone, laptop, desktop) rather than via dedicated hardware. This is the most common consumer model because it’s simple to install, easy to update, and can be customized per device with features like split tunneling, protocol selection, and kill switch controls. Software VPN apps typically provide server lists, auto-connect rules, and leak protection options. The quality difference between apps is huge: better clients integrate with OS networking to prevent DNS leaks and handle reconnects reliably; weaker clients may “look connected” while leaking traffic during transitions. When evaluating software VPNs, focus on: protocol support (WireGuard/OpenVPN/IKEv2), performance on your device, transparency about logs, and independent audits if available. Also consider how the app handles updates - security patches matter. In DVPN ecosystems, the “software VPN” may also be the controller that selects nodes, pays for bandwidth, and routes multi-hop paths; choose clients with clear UI, trustworthy update channels, and sensible defaults for privacy-first behavior.
