PPTP is a very old VPN protocol that is widely considered insecure by modern standards. While PPTP can be easy to configure and may appear “fast,” its known cryptographic weaknesses make it unsuitable for privacy, sensitive browsing, or business use. Attackers can exploit weaknesses in PPTP’s authentication and encryption to recover passwords or decrypt traffic in some scenarios. Many reputable VPN services have deprecated PPTP entirely, and security professionals generally recommend avoiding it. If you see PPTP as the default option on a device or router, look for alternatives such as WireGuard, OpenVPN, or IKEv2/IPsec. If compatibility is the only reason you’re considering PPTP, it’s better to upgrade hardware or software than to rely on a protocol with a poor security track record. Treat PPTP as obsolete for serious VPN use.
