IKEv2/IPsec is a VPN protocol suite known for fast reconnection and strong performance on mobile devices. IKEv2 manages session setup and key negotiation, while IPsec encrypts the data channel. It’s commonly recommended for iOS because it reconnects smoothly when your network changes (for example, switching between Wi-Fi and cellular), reducing dropped calls and stalled apps. IKEv2 is built into many operating systems, so configuration can be simple and stable. The main considerations are compatibility with restrictive firewalls (fixed ports can be blocked) and whether your provider’s implementation includes strong ciphers, modern key exchange, and robust leak protection. For day-to-day privacy and travel, IKEv2 is a solid option when WireGuard isn’t available or when you want a built-in OS profile with reliable “always-on” behavior.
